British Values
Understanding British Values
The Department for Education defines British values as:
• Democracy
• The Rule of Law
• Individual Liberty
• Mutual Respect
• Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
Embedding these values into our daily school life ensures that students develop a strong moral compass, understand their rights and responsibilities, and are equipped to contribute positively to their global society.
Embedding British Values in Our Curriculum
At GFM, we integrate British values into various aspects of our curriculum and school activities:
Democracy
We encourage student participation and voice through
• Pupil Leadership: Elected by their peers, young leaders represent student opinions and contribute to school decision-making processes. This mirrors the democratic electoral system and teaches students about representation and governance.
• Pupil Questionnaires and Feedback: Regular surveys allow students to express their views on school matters, fostering a culture where their opinions are valued and considered.
The Rule of Law
Understanding and adhering to laws are emphasized through:
• Behaviour Policies and Class Charters: Clear school rules are established and consistently reinforced, helping students comprehend the importance of laws in maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
• Visits from Law Enforcement: Engagements with local police and fire services provide practical insights into the role of laws and the consequences of breaking them.
Individual Liberty
We promote personal freedoms within a safe and supportive setting by:
• Encouraging Self-Expression: Students are supported in developing self-knowledge and confidence, enabling them to make informed choices and express their individuality. They are able to follow personal projects via out HP strategy and extracurricular options.
• E-Safety Education: Teaching responsible use of technology ensures students understand their rights and the importance of exercising freedoms safely.
Mutual Respect
Respect is a core value promoted through:
• Inclusive Curriculum: Subjects like Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education and themes such as Take One Picture, teach students about diverse cultures and beliefs, fostering understanding and respect.
• Anti-Bullying Initiatives: Programs and policies are in place to promote respectful interactions and address any form of discrimination or bullying promptly.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
We cultivate tolerance through:
• Celebration of Cultural Events: Observing various festivals and cultural events educates students about different traditions and promotes inclusivity. Our community comes together for National Day and International day when a myriad of cultures is acknowledged.
• Educational Visits and Guest Speakers: Local and international trips to diverse places provide firsthand experiences that enrich students' understanding.
By embedding these British values into our curriculum and school culture, GFM aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are respectful, responsible, and ready to contribute positively to our diverse society.
